While all of the focus this week has been on Hurricane Helene and its direct landfall in Florida, Mexico is grappling with another major storm on its Pacific coastline.

After coming onshore earlier in the week as a Category 3 storm, Hurricane John came back to life and is making a second visit to the country. Here is the latest information on this tropical weather threat.

Hurricane John Regenerates and Takes Second Aim at Mexican Coastline

What was once Category 3 Hurricane John weakened for a time after its Tuesday landfall, however, the feature regenerated and is now spinning in the Eastern Pacific just off the coast of Mexico.

John is forecast to bring another round of torrential rain and high winds to the same general part of the Mexico coastline that it hit during its first incarnation.

Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that John has already been responsible for at least five deaths. Hurricane John came onshore earlier in the week near the tourist destination of Acapulco. The resort city picked up about 17 inches of rain during the initial strike. The community of Las Vigas measured 21 inches of rain out of the first landfall.

The storm was able to regenerate because a portion of its old center of circulation remained intact as it moved offshore the coastline and back out into the warm ocean waters of the Pacific. John was able to regain its wind intensity, keeping its former name as it picked up strength and size.

Forecasters are predicting that John will continue to move to the north and make a second landfall by the end of the week. Unlike the first landfall that hit east of Acapulco, the second strike is expected to come in to the west of the port city.
