The Gulf of Mexico is showing signs of tropical activity with a system potentially coming together in the coming days. Here is a look at what hurricane watchers are monitoring heading into the new week.

Forecasters Monitoring Gulf of Mexico for Signs of Tropical Activity

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is two weeks old today. While no named system has emerged yet, meteorologists are keeping an eye on a few disturbances that are moving through the basin. One system is predicted to travel into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week, potentially turning into the first tropical depression of the young 2024 season.

Should this system develop as predicted, it would likely take root between Monday and Wednesday. Forecasters are growing more certain that this system will continue to develop and impact parts of the U.S. and Mexico over the course of next week.

The potential development of a named system could exacerbate the already challenging flooding issues happening across Florida after a surge of tropical moisture moved through the state this week. What is left of this system is now moving off of the Atlantic coast and could intensify into a named storm as it feeds on the warm waters circulating in this part of the basin.
