Relief for the Wildfires Arrived in the Northeast but is More on the Way?
The Northeast has been grappling with an ongoing drought as well as a heightened wildfire danger in recents weeks thanks to a lack of moisture. The region got a slight bit of relief late Sunday when the rain began to fall, delivering the most significant moisture event in over a month. The good news for the drought-stricken region is that more rain may be on the way.
The rain that fell late Sunday did more than just break the dry spell. The moisture also worked to dampen the dried out vegetation and fallen leaves. This was particularly welcome for an area that was dealing with widespread brush fires over the last several days due to the dry conditions and the unseasonably warm temperatures. Although the weekend rain did little to erase the drought, it did provide some relief for fire crews trying to get these wildfires under control.
The zone from the central Appalachians to the mid-Atlantic saw the bulk of the rainfall. It was not nearly as wet in New England with this region only seeing a few tenths of an inch of moisture out of this weather maker.
