Daily Rain Showers and Storms Roaming the Southeast and Beyond
Alexis Thornton
4 months agoIt was a soggy weekend for the Southeast and that pattern is not expected to change in the coming days. Forecasters are warning that the soaking rain and threat of severe weather will continue to roam the southern U.S. through late this week, delivering a number of nuisances but also providing relief for the ongoing drought. Here is the latest on this wet forecast.
Persistent Rain to Linger in the Southeast and Beyond
Several consecutive days of heavy rain will remain the story for the Southeast this week. Potential impacts of this weather pattern include strong winds and localized flooding. Residents and vacationers should also prepare for widespread travel delays as the daily storms linger until next weekend.
A persistent surge of moist air is fueling this wet activity, aided by what is left of a tropical wave that is also impacting much of Florida. A large area of high pressure is tethered off of the coast of the southeastern U.S., sending the flow of moisture into the Southeast. This zone of moisture got its start in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, explaining the continual stream of precipitation.
Although every day will not be a total washout, those in this region should expect bouts of moisture at least once per day until the weekend arrives. The natural heating of the day will translate to the chance of thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. These storms could turn severe at times, packing dangerous lightning strikes and gusty winds.
The heavy bands of rain will create challenging driving conditions at times. Motorists need to be aware of the risks of reduced visibility on the roadways.
The torrential rain will also raise the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and urban centers. The forecast is predicting that some areas could see rainfall amounts that exceed over an inch per hour, exacerbating the threat of flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
