The beginning of the new month will bring in a major shift in the weather for the Midwest and the Northeast as cooler air replaces the hot and humid conditions as of late. Here is a look at how drastic this weather pattern change will be and when you can expect the switch by Mother Nature.

Cooler Weather in Store for Midwest, Northeast, and Beyond

Residents in a zone from the Midwest and across the coastline of mid-Atlantic and to the north are in store for a refreshing change to the weather over the next several days. Widespread temperatures will fall to levels most often seen at the end of September rather than the first part of the month.

The tumble in the mercury will feel particularly nice after a week that saw temperatures climb past the century mark throughout the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic and into the upper 90s across much of the Midwest. This will make the readings that top out in the 70s even more noticeable.

The late-August heat has been blamed on a large area of high pressure that has been tethered over the Plains and the eastern U.S. The heat dome is forecast to start to break apart in the coming days as several rounds of storms push into the region and reduce its domination of the weather pattern.

The forecast is calling for the relief from the heat to arrive by the beginning of the Labor Day holiday weekend, however, the most noticeable infusion of cooler air will arrive by the middle of next week. A mass of cool and dry air dipping down from Canada at the end of the weekend will jumpstart this trend, also bringing down humidity levels at the same time.

Timing of the Change in the Temperatures

Most of the Midwest and the Great Lakes region will spend the beginning of the Labor Day weekend with highs in the low to mid 80s. The mercury will start to slip late Sunday and into Monday with highs bottoming out in the 70s by the return to work and school duties on Tuesday. This pattern will translate to reading that range between 3 and 6 degrees below the historical average for the beginning of September. Although people attending college football games on Saturday will still be dealing with widespread summer heat, this will change as the holiday weekend progresses.

The cooler weather will certainly be a welcome change for some of the largest metro areas on the East Coast. The region will see temperatures that tumble between 15 and 20 degrees from the sizzling highs earlier in the week. For instance, after temperatures dip slightly to start the weekend, New York City will see readings return to the low 80s on Sunday. However, a secondary push of cooler air will arrive to the Big Apple on Monday, bringing temperatures back into the upper 70s for highs for the balance of the week.
