As predicted, Beryl regained hurricane strength late Sunday, just hours before striking the coastline of Texas. Here is the latest on this monster tropical weather maker, including who should expect to see its impacts next and when they are forecast to arrive.

Beryl Comes Onshore in Texas as Category 1 Hurricane

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Matagorda, Texas on Monday at about 4 am CDT as a Category 1 hurricane. The feature lost strength as it moved farther inland, weakening into a tropical storm at about 10 am CDT. The storm will continue to unleash strong winds, storm surge flooding, and tornadoes across the south-central U.S. in the coming hours.

At least two fatalities have been blamed on Beryl in Texas. A 53-year-old man died in the Houston suburb of Humble after a tree fell on his house and trapped him inside. The man's wife and children were not hurt.

Also in Harris County, a 74-year-old woman in the Houston suburb of Bammel was killed when a tree fell on a home. These two fatalities bring the total number of deaths attributed to Beryl over its lifespan to 13. The storm killed at least 11 people across the Caribbean and Mexico over the last week.

What is left of Beryl is then forecast to move well into the Midwest and the Northeast through the week. Beryl has been slow to lose steam because it was still intensifying when it moved on shore. The eyewall passed dangerously close to the metropolitan Houston area, sending heavy rain and hurricane-force winds throughout the populated region.
