Baseball Opening Day Weather Mishaps Through the Years
Alexis Thornton
4 days agoBaseball fans were rejoicing on Thursday as Opening Day festivities kicked off at ballparks all around America. Mother Nature was mostly cooperative for the spring rite of passage. A few stadiums were dealing with scattered rain showers and cooler temperatures, but there were no major weather events to dampen the fun.
However, this has not always been the case. Major League Baseball (MLB) has seen its fair share of disruptive weather on Opening Day. This is understandable given the timing of the start of the season when spring storms are just ramping up and Old Man Winter sometimes overstays his welcome. Here is a look at some of the most extreme weather conditions to hit on MLB Opening Day.
Rain Halts the Festivities
You only have to go back one year to find the last time that rain halted the Opening Day games and surrounding events. A game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets in New York as well as a contest between the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia were both postponed due to rain and wind on March 28, 2024.
It was a soaker of a day for the Northeast on that date in history. New York's LaGuardia Airport measured 0.76 inches of rain as a system trained over the Big Apple. Philadelphia was not nearly as wet, only picking up 0.07 inches of rain. However, the City of Brotherly Love was under the gun for winds that clocked in as high as 20 mph at times.
